Plan Launches SDG YAM Pilot in Nigeria

Plan International’s USA and Nigeria offices have partnered to pilot SDG Youth Action Mapper. The pilot is taking place in Calabar in Nigeria’s southern Cross River State.

To celebrate beginning of the pilot, a launch event was held on October 13, 2016 that was attended by 104 people. Attendees included representatives from government ministries such as the Ministries of Sustainable Development and Social Welfare, Education and Youth Development. In addition, representatives from local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) were in attendance. Media coverage of the event was provided by the Ministry of Information, Cross River Broadcasting Corporation and the Nigeria Chronicle.

As part of this pilot, Plan Nigeria is engaging 40 youth who have received education on the SDGs and training on how to map CSOs and community organizations. The mappers will collect information on the opportunities provided by these local organizations for youth to take action on the SDGs.

The mapping is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2016.  Feedback from this mapping exercise will be used to inform the scaling and roll out of SDG YAM in other communities worldwide.
